As our primary program, it targets improving the foundational literacy levels of children aged 3-10 years primarily in children’s homes and rescue centers as they tend to face severe learning challenges such as access to school, overcrowded classrooms, lack of resources and no motivation. Our team provides engaging, relevant, adaptable learning activities and experiences; fostering a love for sounds and words and empowering children with essential literacy skills to succeed in school and beyond.
A teacher capacity-building program for under-resourced slum and rural schools that incorporates practical material and lesson design activities with demonstrations of how we do it at Watoto Wasome. It provides skills on integrating a child-centered approach to improve foundational literacy by assessing and grouping learners based on their literacy level rather than their age and tailoring teaching methods to address specific learner needs that ensure active learner participation and improved outcomes.
Translated as Reading Rocks!, it fosters a love for reading in under-resourced schools where storybooks are scarce or nonexistent. Children explore a variety of curated story books with interesting tales and illustrations throughout one term, enhanced by interactive storytelling and activities by our team. We aim to boost positive reading attitudes and comprehension because of the power of stories to improve literacy. The cherry on top…at the end of the term, every child is gifted with a storybook of their own to keep!
We want to reach 200 more children within the next 1 year. Something that we have so far been able to do in a combined 3 years of partnership effort. In order to do so we need:
To financially support the purchase of storybooks and learning materials.
Come together as a group with friends or organization to either raise money for our cause or join us on the ground and have fun making a difference in the lives of 4.3 million children in literacy poverty.
Collaborate with us to share vital literacy messages with your audience strengthening your brand awareness and helping underprivileged children learn to read.
In order to reach our goal of reaching more children we need your hands and heart, together with your time as we improve literacy in children, one letter-sound at a time.
