Our core program brings hands-on, play-based literacy experiences directly to children in rescue centers and children’s homes through our volunteers and teachers. We focus on these settings because many are out of school or struggling to catch up due to trauma, learning gaps, or low motivation. We meet each child where they are: beginning with letter-sounds, moving to simple word blending, and finally to full sentences. With care and consistency, we help children build the foundational skills and confidence they need to learn and thrive.
We equip educators in under-resourced informal settlements and rural schools with practical, hands-on strategies to strengthen foundational literacy in their classrooms. Through interactive workshops and real-time demonstrations and support, teachers learn how to design child-centered lessons, assess learners by literacy level, not age, and tailor instruction to meet diverse needs. The result: more engaged classrooms and stronger reading outcomes for every child.
In schools and homes across informal settlements where storybooks are rare, Kusoma Kunabamba! (Reading Rocks!) sparks a love for reading among children. Over one term, they get to explore a variety of storybooks thoughtfully curated with captivating stories and colorful illustrations relatable to their environment as well as interactive storytelling activities and games from our team. The goal? To strengthen children’s reading fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, and comprehension and build positive reading habits. And the best part…each child receives a storybook of their very own to keep!
We want to reach 200 more children within the next 1 year. Something that we have so far been able to do in a combined 3 years of partnership effort. In order to do so we need:
To financially support the purchase of storybooks and learning materials.
Come together as a group with friends or organization to either raise money for our cause or join us on the ground and have fun making a difference in the lives of 4.3 million children in literacy poverty.
Collaborate with us to share vital literacy messages with your audience strengthening your brand awareness and helping underprivileged children learn to read.
In order to reach our goal of reaching more children we need your hands and heart, together with your time as we improve literacy in children, one letter-sound at a time.
